Trimming Away the Blues

For patients who spend longer periods in the hospital, whether they are unable to leave their ward or too unwell to care for their appearance, a simple haircut can enliven their experience significantly.

One of AMK – THKH’s volunteer-facilitated initiative is a haircutting service. For Mr. Osman Bin Ahmad, getting his first haircut since admitting to AMK – THKH was a long but satisfying wait. Mr. Osman was undergoing haemodialysis three times a week, causing him to lose 10kg in body weight at that time.

Despite these challenges, Mr. Osman remained positive and focused on his recovery. His wife, Mdm. Aishah, was by his side every day since his admission, supporting him through the difficult journey.

Mr. Osman is a tidy and organised man himself, and was used to getting a haircut monthly prior to his admission. However, after months without one, he joked, “My hair is good to enlist into NS… so they can shave me botak!” Mdm. Aishah also recounted how Mr. Osman regained his countenance, seeing him smile brightly after the haircut.

It is not a surprise that this volunteer-driven service remains high in demand. Offered since 2016, around 70 patients benefit from the service every month, made possible by a dedicated team of 7 volunteer hairdressers and 8 other volunteers who assist with various tasks.
